Don advocates equal access to NELFUND for private university students

The Vice-Chancellor, Trinity University (TU), Sabo, Yaba, Prof. Clement Kolawole has advocated for equal access of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), for students in private universities.

Kolawole advocated for this in a statement by Mr Michael Bamigbola, Principal Assistant Registrar/Head, Corporate Affairs, TU, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

He said that the recommendation was aimed at promoting equal access to education funding and supporting the development of private universities in Nigeria.

He also called for the redirecting of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) excess revenue to universities, as well as advocating private universities inclusion in NELFUND and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) schemes.

He stressed the need for a more strategic allocation of resources, and suggested that JAMB’s revenue generated from applicants, be reinvested in universities to support research, projects, and infrastructural development.

According to him, by redirecting JAMB’s excess revenue to universities and ensuring inclusivity in education funding schemes, Nigeria can take significant steps towards enhancing the quality and accessibility of higher education.

He noted that private university students were also Nigerians and should have equal access to NELFUND, adding that excluding them was discriminatory and violates the Nigerian constitution.

”Private universities contribute significantly to the country’s development and should be included in TETFUND,” he said.

The Don reiterated that the constitution precludes discrimination against Nigerians whether by social status, gender or whatever reason.
