UHC : Yobe enrolls over 287,000 persons into health insurance
The Yobe Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (YSCHMA) says it has enrolled over 287,000 persons under its health insurance scheme as part of efforts to attain Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC).
Its Executive Secretary, Dr Babagana Tijjani, stated this during a road work in commemoration of the 2025 UHC Day in Damaturu on Friday.
Tijjani, who was represented by Dr Isa Adamu, the agency’s Director, Standard and Quality Assurance, said over 197,000 of the beneficiaries were enrolled under the formal sector,
He said over 32,000 persons were enrolled under the Social Equity Sector, while over 52,000 others were registered under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHPF), jointly funded by the state and the Federal Government.
The executive secretary said there were over 222 health centres providing primary and secondary healthcare services to the enrollees across the state.
Tijjani expressed concern that in spite of the level of enrolment, only less than 10 per cent of the state population had so far been captured in the scheme.
He, however, said that the agency recently reviewed its communications strategy, which would be implemented in 2026 to attract enrolments, especially in the informal sectors.
“ Today is an important reminder of our shared responsibility to ensure that every individual regardless of age, gender, economic status, or location has access to the healthcare they need without facing financial hardship.
“The global theme for this year: ‘Healthy Beginning, Hopeful Future,’ speaks directly to the vision and mandate of YSCHMA.
“Our commitment remains clear: to build a resilient, equitable, and people-centred health system that leaves no one behind.
“Yobe has continued to make steady progress toward UHC under the leadership of Gov. Mai Mala Buni,” the executive secretary said.

Tijjani said in the last one year, the agency had expanded its coverage, strengthened verification systems, improved provider quality assessments and enhanced accountability mechanisms.
“We are also conducting state-wide validation of BHCPF and social equity enrollees data to ensure accuracy and that only beneficiaries with valid National Identification Numbers (NIN) are captured for improved transparency,” he said.
The executive secretary commended the state Ministry of Health, Primary Healthcare Board, National Health Insurance Authority, civil society organisations and donor agencies for their unwavering supports to YSCHMA.
Tijjani called on the citizenry to enrol in the agency’s contributory health scheme as a proactive measure to safeguard their health.
