Nasarawa Assembly lifts suspension of Lafia council chairman

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has lifted the suspension of the Executive Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, Mr Mohammed Arabo, over his alleged involvement in the impeachment of the council’s Speaker, Mr Shuaibu Madaki.

The Speaker of the House, Dr Danladi Jatau, announced the decision during plenary on Tuesday in Lafia.

Jatau said the lifting of the suspension followed the withdrawal of the case instituted at the High Court by Arabo, as well as appeals by the Emir of Lafia, Retired Justice Sidi Bage Muhammad, and other critical stakeholders in the state.

He cautioned against any form of victimisation of the Deputy Chairman of Lafia Local Government Area, Mr Uba Arikiya, who acted as chairman during the suspension on the instruction of the House.

“The Deputy Chairman should not be victimised. What we need in the state is peace. He acted based on the directive of the House,” the speaker said.

Jatau directed the Clerk of the House to communicate the resolution to Gov. Abdullahi Sule for necessary action.

He also advised the public against undermining the constitutional powers of the House, stressing that the Assembly had the authority to invite any individual for questioning.

“Nobody, no matter how highly placed, should undermine the powers of the House. We have the power to invite anybody for questioning,” he added.

The speaker, further warned local government chairmen against abuse of office.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Musa Abubakar, moved a motion for the lifting of Arabo’s suspension.

He appreciated the interventions of stakeholders who appealed for the recall of the suspended chairman.

The motion was seconded by Mr Esson Mairiga, member representing Lafia North Constituency, and was unanimously adopted by the House.
