Yobe people praise Buni for building modern markets

Residents of Yunusari and Machina Local Government Areas of Yobe, have commended Gov. Mai Mala Buni for constructing modern markets in four towns of Yunusari, Machina, Buni-yadi and Ngalda.

They observed that the move would no doubt fast track post insurgency economic recovery.

The residents spoke in separate interviews on Monday during a media tour of critical projects executed by Yobe Government across the 17 local government areas.

According to them, the markets will boost commercial activities, improve livelihoods and strengthen cross-border trade, especially in the historic town of Machina, a major trading hub linking Nigeria with neighbouring countries.

They expressed optimism that the markets would stimulate employment opportunities, enhance trade volumes and contribute to sustainable economic growth in Machina, Yunusari and neighbouring communities

A trader from Machina, Alhaji Musa Abubakar, said the project would provide a secure and organised environment for traders, farmers and transporters to conduct business.

Abubakar noted that Machina and surrounding communities were known for large-scale agricultural production, particularly grains and livestock, but had lacked modern market facilities for many years.

Similarly, a resident of Yunusari, Hajiya Zainab Ali, said the market would ease the marketing of farm produce and reduce post-harvest losses.

She added that women traders would particularly benefit from improved stalls, storage facilities and increased customer traffic.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Alhaji Abdullahi Bego, said the markets were part of the state government’s efforts to rebuild local economies affected by years of insurgency.

Bego said the destruction of livelihoods and commercial networks had necessitated deliberate investments in infrastructure to restore economic activities at the grassroots.

He explained that the construction of markets was aimed at creating safe and conducive spaces for trading, attracting investment and encouraging residents to return to farming and commerce.

According to him, Machina, as a border and agricultural community, is strategically selected to enhance rural development and economic inclusion.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, Alhaji Ahmad Abbakyari, said Machina project was a modern market with extensive facilities.

Abbakyari said the market comprised 96 shops, 146 open stalls and 46 stores and warehouses.

He added that the project also included an administrative block, police outpost, fire service unit and a banking hall to support smooth commercial operations.

The commissioner said the market project, which commenced in August 2025, had recorded significant progress within a few months, reflecting the administration’s commitment to timely delivery.
