The Commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Hon. Abdullahi Bego, has said that the creation of the Yobe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) reflects the strong commitment of Governor Mai Mala Buni CON, COMN, to protecting the welfare and addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable persons in the state.

Hon. Bego made this known when partners from Street Child and Protection Without Borders, alongside the Chairman and staff of the Yobe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, officials of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD), and representatives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports led by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), paid him an advocacy visit in Damaturu.

In a statement made available to newsmen in Damaturu by the Director information service ministry  of  information, home affairs and culture Ali Musa Yawale said the  Commissioner noted that the establishment of the Commission was a deliberate effort by Governor Buni’s administration to promote inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities, in line with global best practices and human rights standards.

He explained that the Commission serves as a critical institutional framework to protect the rights of persons with disabilities, ensure their access to essential services, and enhance their participation in social, economic, and political activities.

Hon. Bego reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry to supporting policies the efforts of the development partners and stakeholders through the ministry’s agency especially YBC and YTV for effective promotion of inclusivity and improve the quality of life of vulnerable groups across the state.

He equally commended the Yobe State House of Assembly, the  partners, Street Child and Protection Without Borders among other stakeholders for their continued support and collaboration with the state government, stressing that their contributions remain vital in strengthening programmes targeted at protecting and empowering persons with disabilities.

Also, speaking, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Mohammed Goje, represented by the Director of Search and Rescue of the agency, Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim Jalo, who led the team, said the visit was aimed at introducing the new project by the partners geared towards strengthening collaboration with the Ministry to advance advocacy, protection, and inclusive development for persons with disabilities in Yobe State.

He said the project is tagged, “Advancing Capacity, Community Systems, and Enabling Supportive Structures for Persons with Disabilities in the BAY States (Borno, Adamawa, Yobe-ACCESS Project).”

He further said, “Is also meant to strengthen capacities of community-based organizations (CBOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), national non-governmental organizations (NNGOs), international non-governmental organizations (INGOs), and relevant government ministries on disability inclusion and support; coordination at all levels to provide specialized assistance for PWD, including policy advocacy and resource mobilization.

“This integrated project, also funded by NHF, operates in Fune and Damaturu LGAs, collaborating closely with YOBESEMA’s Disability Working Group, the Yobe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, and JONAPWD to foster sustainable systems for PWD empowerment.
