Mechanisation: N-HYPPADEC distributes 130 power tillers to Kebbi farmers
The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has distributed 130 units of 13-horse power tillers to selected farmers in Kebbi to boost agricultural production and enhance food security.
Presenting the tillers in Birnin Kebbi on Friday, the Managing Director, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq-Yelwa said the intervention aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Represented by his Special Adviser on Technical Matters, Prof. Yasir Abubakar, Sadiq-Yelwa said the initiative aimed to promote mechanisation, reduce drudgery, and improve productivity among farmers in benefiting communities.
He explained that the distribution was part of the commission’s Agricultural Empowerment Programme, under which 850 power tillers were procured for distribution across N-HYPPADEC’s 10 member-states.
“Kebbi received 130 units to support farmers in hydroelectric power producing communities.

“Agriculture remains one of the most dependable pathways to economic prosperity, job creation, poverty reduction, and sustainable food security.
“The commission recognises the invaluable role of farmers, especially those in hydroelectric and riverine areas, in driving national food production and economic stability,” he said.
Sadiq-Yelwa noted that the machines were distributed free of charge and urged beneficiaries to use them judiciously.
He warned against misuse or sale, stressing that the commission would monitor utilisation to ensure the programme’s objectives were met.
The MD commended the Kebbi Government under Gov. Nasir Idris for its partnership in implementing developmental projects across the state, and thanked traditional rulers, community leaders, and farmers’ associations for supporting the initiative.
He disclosed that the commission was developing additional agricultural support programmes, including extension services, hand-driven planters, and knapsack sprayers, to further strengthen farming systems and value chains.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Shehu Mu’azu, said the initiative followed consultations among power producing states on ways to improve farmers’ productivity.

Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that officials from participating states had visited Thailand to study the impact of power tillers on agricultural output.
Mu’azu said: “The only way to improve farmers’ production capacity is through modern mechanisation, especially power tillers. That informed our decision to convince the commission to support our farmers.”
The commissioner also urged beneficiaries to use the tillers as intended and warned against selling them.
Alhaji Sadiq Ubandoman-Gwandu commended N-HYPPADEC for its sustained interventions to improve livelihoods in member communities.
Speaking on behalf of beneficiaries, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankubura thanked the commission for its continued support and praised the Federal Government’s agricultural policies aimed at boosting food security.
