Heatwave: Expert advises regular water intake to prevent health risks
Dr Hauwa Kwanda, a resident doctor at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has recommended regular water intake to mitigate the effects of heat wave.
Kwanda told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Potiskum on Thursday that residents should cultivate the habit of drinking sufficient water, even when they did not feel thirsty.
She advised residents to wear lightweight, bright and loose-fitting clothing, and to use umbrellas, caps and sunglasses when going outdoors.
The expert encouraged the public to adopt preventive measures against heat exposure, warning that excessive exposure to scorching sun could cause dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and sunburn.
She called on stakeholders to intensify public enlightenment on the dangers of excessive sun exposure, which she said could be life-threatening.
“Even though awareness is improving nowadays, there is still a need for more public health education through radio programmes, television, social media, schools, Mosques, Churches and community gatherings.

“People need to understand that extreme heat can be dangerous and even life-threatening if proper precautions are not taken.
“Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, and seek medical attention immediately if someone develops severe weakness, confusion, persistent vomiting or collapse due to heat,” she said.
The expert further advised consumption of room-temperature water, rather than excessively cold water, which she said could lead to other complications.
