Volleyball: Over 40 Nigerian players competing abroad — Nimrod
The President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF), Musa Nimrod, says the federation has produced more than 40 Nigerian players currently competing professionally abroad.
Nimrod said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Abuja.
According to him, the federation’s agenda is to secure better career opportunities for volleyball players in the country.
“I recently requested for the list of our foreign-based players and, to my surprise, we have more than 40 players competing outside Nigeria,” he said.
Nimrod said the development reflected the steady progress volleyball had recorded in recent years through grassroots programmes, school sports initiatives and improved administration within the federation.
He said the federation had continued to invest in grassroots development across the country.
The NVBF president recalled that the federation organised a female volleyball development camp three years ago, where more than 100 young girls were discovered and trained.
He cited the success story of Vincent Mathias, a Nigerian player based in France, who recently won the league title with Montpellier Volleyball Club after emerging through the grassroots volleyball system in Nigeria.
Nimrod added that volleyball academies were now operating in virtually all states of the federation.
He said the federation’s collaboration with the National School Sports Federation had also contributed significantly to expanding the game among young athletes.

“The federation remains committed to supporting volleyball development nationwide through competitions, equipment distribution and talent discovery programmes,” he said.
Nimrod appealed to journalists and stakeholders to continue promoting the positive achievements of Nigerian volleyball.
He also urged supporters to follow the ongoing 2026 NVBF Phase One Division One and Division Two National League taking place at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
The competition, which began on May 23, is expected to end on June 5.
