C’River pays WASSCE fee for 30,000 indigent students – Gov’s aide
The Government of Cross River pays fee for over 30,000 indigent students of the state for the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the last two years.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr Ekpenyong Akiba, made the disclosure during a sectoral media briefing on Gov. Bassey Otu’s three years in office, organised by the Forum of Special Advisers.
Akiba said that Otu’s administration “prioritised human capital development and has made huge investments in this regard”.
He said that several schools across the 18 Local Government Areas of the state were undergoing rehabilitation, while others had been completed.
He said the government was able to achieve the feat in the midst of competing public demands “due to prudent management of scarce resources.
“We have registered over 30,000 indigent students for WASSCE within two consecutive years and you will agree with me the gesture had positively impacted many families.
“Also, as a matter of priority in this administration, about 15,000 personnel in the education sector were promoted after stagnating at one level in the civil service for a very long time.

“In the same vein, over 200 health workers were recruited to strengthen healthcare delivery in the state,” he said.
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Project Monitoring and Evaluation, Mr Ralph Morphy, said over 120-km of road projects were undertaken across the state since the inception of the administration.
He said the figure included
the rehabilitation and maintenance of the Murtala Mohammed highway in Calabar, measuring 19.17km, construction and rehabilitation of 2.078km of road network in 13 Brigade.
Morphy also listed the rehabilitation and maintenance of Parliamentary Extension Road, measuring 6.6km in Calabàr Municipality as part of the 120km of roads done by the administration.
He also cited the Mkpani-Agoi Road in Yakurr LGA and the 1.2-km Ofumbongha Road construction in Obubra LGA, both in Cross River Central Senatorial District.
For the Northern Senatorial District, he listed the 1.9-km Ishibori-Caderal Road, and the 3.5-km Sankwala Ring Road, among others, that had either been completed or still ongoing.
