Lagos receives 10 compactor trucks to boost waste management

The Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources receives 10 waste compactor trucks to strengthen waste management operations across the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this in a statement issued by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mr Kunle Adeshina, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Wahab said the trucks were donated by the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority as part of efforts to support environmental sustainability in the state.

He described the gesture as a demonstration of growing collaboration among government agencies and the private sector in addressing environmental challenges.

According to him, Lagos generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily due to rapid urbanisation and population growth, making sustained investment in infrastructure and strategic partnerships imperative.

The commissioner said the state government had continued to invest in waste management through the ministry and the Lagos Waste Management Authority.

He listed some of the initiatives to include strengthening Private Sector Participation operators, expanding recycling programmes, deploying marine waste evacuation teams and promoting waste-to-wealth projects.

Wahab said the state was also investing in modern waste management technologies and pursuing a zero-waste economy in which waste is treated as a resource with economic value.

He added that Lagos had signed agreements with local and international partners to reduce landfill disposal through recycling, reuse and resource recovery initiatives.

According to him, the partnerships are expected to divert about 5,000 metric tonnes from the state’s daily waste stream and reduce pressure on landfill sites.

Wahab described the donation as timely, particularly with the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

He said the compactors would improve waste evacuation, reduce collection turnaround time and enhance operational efficiency across the state.

The commissioner added that the trucks would be deployed to high waste-generating areas and communities requiring improved waste collection services.

Wahab commended the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority for supporting environmental sustainability and urged other institutions and organisations to contribute to cleaner communities and sustainable urban development.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer of the Lagos State Lottery and Gaming Authority, Mr Bashir Abiola Are, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to supporting residents’ welfare.

Are said the authority remained dedicated to promoting education, healthcare and environmental sustainability beyond its statutory mandate.

According to him, a clean environment is essential to public health and residents’ wellbeing.

He said the donation aligned with the vision of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his Deputy Obafemi Hamzat for a cleaner Lagos.

Are acknowledged that waste management needs in Lagos exceeded the number of trucks donated, noting that many more vehicles would be required to meet the demands of the growing megacity.

He, however, assured residents of the authority’s continued partnership with the state government to improve waste management and environmental sanitation.
