ABS reconstruction will restore Kaduna’s sports glory — Uba Sani
Gov. Uba Sani of Kaduna State says the ongoing reconstruction of Ahmadu Bello Stadium (ABS) will restore the state’s historic position as a major centre of sports in Nigeria.
Sani stated this on Tuesday during an inspection tour of the ongoing reconstruction of the stadium alongside former Super Eagles stars, Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal and Emmanuel Babayaro.
He said the stadium was being transformed into a modern, FIFA-standard sporting complex with a 33,000-capacity main bowl, more than twice its original 16,000 capacity.
According to him, the project also features a hybrid turf, which he described as the first of its kind in Nigeria, as well as other world-class sporting facilities.
The governor said the training pitches had been completed, while work was ongoing on the main bowl, ticketing points, media centre and athletes’ hostel.
“Our objective is larger than rebuilding a stadium. We are restoring Kaduna’s historic place at the heart of Nigerian sports, attracting major competitions, expanding opportunities for our young people, increasing internally generated revenue, and stimulating wider economic activity,” Sani said.
He said the reconstructed facility would be completed by November and would be ready to host major local and international competitions.
Sani also announced the fulfilment of a 30-year-old promise made to members of the Atlanta 1996 Super Eagles, who were promised lands and streets named after them.

He said lands had been allocated to the football legends, while streets across Kaduna State would bear their names.
“These football heroes elevated Nigeria’s name, inspired generations and left an indelible mark on the global game. They deserve not merely our applause, but enduring recognition,” he said.
Responding, Amokachi commended the governor for his commitment to sports development and the reconstruction of football facilities across the state to international standards.
Amokachi expressed appreciation to the governor for developing facilities that conform with FIFA standards, saying the initiative would provide young football talents with better opportunities to develop their skills.
He said the reconstruction of ABS would help attract major competitions to Kaduna and further strengthen the state’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s leading sports centres.
He also commended the governor for recognising the contributions of the Atlanta 1996 Olympic gold-winning team, saying the legends deserved lasting recognition for their contribution to Nigerian football.
