Hospital unveils emergency care pack for patients in Anambra
The management of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH) Awka, Anambra, has introduced an Emergency Care Pack (ECP) to support prompt initial care for patients brought-in in in emergency situations.
The Chief Medical Director (CMD), COOUTH, Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu,
made this known in a statement by the hospital’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) Mrs Lovelyn Ezeakunne, in Awka on Monday.
“The ECP is designed to reduce delays that may occur when patients arrive in critical condition and their families are yet to provide essential medical consumables needed for initial treatment.
“By ensuring that essential materials required for immediate care are readily available before patients’ folders are opened, we can provide prompt care upon arrival and avoid unnecessary delays caused by the time required to open folders and procure emergency supplies,” she said.
Umeakuewulu said that the initiative would help healthcare workers commenced appropriate care while relatives make arrangements for other requirements.
According to her, this practical intervention demonstrates a clear understanding of the urgency of emergency situations and the anxiety families face when a loved one is rushed to the hospital.

She explained that the pack contained essential medical consumables, drugs, infusions such as five per cent dextrose, lancet, glucometer strips as clinically indicated for patients with maternal, adult and paediatric emergencies.
The CMD also said that beyond the provision of medical consumables, the initiative highlighted the commitment to practical solutions that put patients’ immediate needs first.
She further said that the measure offered would some relief to families during stressful moments, by helping to bridge the gap between a patient’s arrival and the provision of further requirements.
“The initiative also reflects the broader vision of Gov. Charles Soludo’s administration to build a healthier Anambra through improved healthcare services and people-centred development,” she said.
She added that the ECP represented a practical contribution to the long-term aspirations of Anambra Vision 2070, where healthy people are fundamental to sustainable development and improved quality of life.
