Students’ Protest: Kaduna lawmaker lauds College authorities over proactive measures

Mr Yusuf Mugu, (PDP-Kaura constituency) of the Kaduna State House of Assembly on Tuesday commended the management of College of Education, Gidan Waya in Kaduna state for its proactive measures ahead of protest by students.

In an interview in Kaduna on Tuesday, the lawmaker said, but for the foresight of the school authorities, the situation would have been out of control.

“The management of the institution had, most likely, sensed the likelihood of protest and proactively informed the security apparatus before the sad incident occurred.

“It is humanly understood that students are likely to react given the state of economic hardship biting on everyone,” Mugu said.

He commiserated with the management of the institution and family of one of the students who died during a demonstration that turned violent on Monday.

The lawmaker, who is the Deputy Minority Whip and Chairman, Committee on Public Petition, described the development as unfortunate.

He then appealed to students and members of the public, to resist temptations capable of luring them into taking the laws into their hands, but should instead, exhaust appropriate channel recognised by law.

The institution had closed for its mid-semester break on Sunday, only for the students to protest the following day over alleged plans to increase tuition fee by the state government

VMT NEWS reports that the State Police Command had, in a statement, promised to investigate the cause of the death of a student during the protest.

In a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer,ASP Muhammad Jalige, the Command said the death of the student and injury of two others, occurred on Monday.

“Today, Monday 28th June, 2021 at about 8am, the Command was informed of protest and road blockade by students of College of Education, Gidan Waya, Kafanchan, over the recent increase in tuition fee by the Kaduna state Government.

“On receipt of the information, the Command immediately dispatched Operatives to restore normalcy.

“ The contingent professionally and successfully dispersed the protesters and warned them not to embark on further protest and road blockade, considering the existing warning against such action, issued by the Kaduna state Police Command a fortnight ago.

However, at about 9.30 am, information has it that the students re-converged again and blocked the Gidan Waya – Kafanchan Federal Highway, and were becoming unruly and riotous.

“ At a point, the protesters blocked the convoy of a military sector Commander, injuring him and one other.

“The situation resulted into a fracas where three protesters were injured in attempt to use minimal force to disperse the riotous students.

“The victims were taken to the Hospital for medical attention but unfortunately, one person died while receiving medical attention,” it had said.

The Command urged the students to embrace dialogue in expressing their grievances, just as it pledged to conduct “diligent investigation into the immediate and remote causes of the fracas.”
