ASUU Gives Scholarship To 10 Indigent Students, Commissions Fitness Center In UDUS

The Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) Usman Danfodiyo University, (UDUS) branch on Thursday gave scholarship to no fewer than 10 indigent students of the ivory tower. 

Addressing the elated gathering, the chairman of UDUS/ASUU branch, Professor Mohammed Al-Mustapha said the union is extensively concern about the general well-being of Nigerian students. 

Prof Al-Mustapha who is the host, reaffirmed that, some  misconstrue ASUU to be synonimious to strike, while on the contrary, it’s concern is humanity, equity, justice and development of the country and it’s people. 

Al-Mustapha further clarified that, “‘the ASUU Indigent students scholarship is a yearly gesture by the national body. One student from each State is given 100,000 courtesy of national ASUU. 

“”However, the UDUS branch of ASUU saw the need to compliment that gesture hence giving scholarship to additional 9 indigent students of the institution””, Prof Al-Mustapha noted.  

Before presenting the scholarship to the 10 recipients, the guest of honor and ASUU Zonal Coordinator, Sokoto Zone Professor, Abubakar Sabo divulged that ASUU also donated 50 million naira to Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in North West and North Central. 

Continuing, Prof. Sabo said, 

“‘ASUU is the last defender of the common man as it  opposes polices that are anti masses, and profile better alternatives of doing things to the government aside impacting knowledge”.

He however berates students (NANS) for not supporting ASUU when in struggle. 

Earlier in his address, the special guest of honor and UDUS Vice Chancellor, Professor Bilbis Lawal represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development, Professor Yusuf Saidu congratulated the benefiting indigent students and the institutions ASUU for providing a befiting fitness center, which will be used for social interactions as well.

Responding to the gesture, one of the scholarship recipients, Safianu Muhammed thanked ASUU and assure that they will make judicious use of what was given to them. 

Another beneficiary, a 400 level student of Physics Department, Comfort Lawal while thanking ASUU said she has to go to class most times on empty stomach.

“I sometimes sleeps in class without eating anything. At times, I will call people for assistance but all I get most times is excuses and promises. But I am determine never to let myself down. Therefore, I am honestly grateful to ASUU for putting a smile on my face”.  Said Comfort.
