The Borno State Police Command has apprehended Usakahyel Adamu, a 24-year-old, for the murder of his 90-year-old grandfather, Yakubu Ibrahim. Alongside Adamu, eleven individuals have been arrested for crimes including culpable homicide, theft, vandalization, and drug-related offenses.
Murder Case
During a press briefing at the Police Headquarters in Maiduguri on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Nahum Daso, detailed the incident. On July 7, 2024, at approximately 1600HRS, Adamu Yakubu reported that his son, Usakahyel Adamu, had fatally struck his grandfather, Yakubu Ibrahim, with a hoe at around 1400HRS. The investigation revealed that Usakahyel had an altercation with his grandfather over alleged insults and unwarranted pushing. Usakahyel was subsequently arrested, and the hoe was recovered as evidence. The suspect is to be charged for prosecution.
Domestic Dispute Leading to Death
In a separate incident on July 4, 2024, at about 0430HRS, Bulama Mulikabu reported that a domestic dispute in Kautikari Village, Chibok LGA, had resulted in a fatality. Lydia Aji, 40, struck her husband, Aji Makinta, on the head with an axe, leading to his immediate death. The altercation stemmed from a disagreement over their 13-year-old daughter, Rachael Aji, who had stolen and sold a goat. The investigation into this case is ongoing.
Arrests for Drug-Related Offenses
On July 14, 2024, at approximately 1800HRS, a police patrol team from Gwange Police Division conducted a stop-and-search operation at Gwange Ward, resulting in the arrest of three individuals for drug possession:
- Abubakar Adam was found with 28 pieces of Exole tablets.
- Abba Mantrab possessed 47 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
- Abubakar Mustapha had 154 pieces of D5 tablets and 130 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp.
The suspects will be charged to court following the investigation.
Vandalization and Theft
On the same day, July 14, 2024, at about 0600HRS, the State Intelligence Department (SID) arrested five individuals involved in the vandalization and theft of public infrastructure. The suspects, aged between 14 and 33 years, were caught stealing solar panels, batteries, and inverters from street lights in the Layin Hadiza Moduganari area. Further investigation revealed that the group specialized in vandalizing public infrastructures and breaking into shops in and around Maiduguri Metropolis. The suspects will face court charges after the investigation concludes.
Theft of Water Pump
On July 16, 2024, at about 1000HRS, the police, acting on credible information, arrested Manda Usman, 23, for stealing a water sump pump. Usman was caught trying to sell the stolen item for N80,000. The investigation revealed the theft occurred in Mashidmami Sulumri, and Usman will be prosecuted.
Threats and Intimidation
On July 7, 2024, Maidami Alhaji Bako reported receiving death threats from an unknown caller demanding N2 million. The State Intelligence Department’s discreet investigation led to the arrest of three suspects: Mohammed Goni, Modu Mustapha, and Mustapha Mohammed Lawan, all residents of Gwange Ward, Maiduguri. The suspects confessed to the crime and will be prosecuted.
