Brazil records highest electric car sales as demand surge
Brazil has recorded its highest level of new car sales in 13 years, driven by booming demand for electric and hybrid vehicles as consumers increasingly shift towards cleaner transport technologies.
The report, released by Band News, a partner to TV BRICS added that more than 1.7 million new vehicles were sold across Brazil during the first four months of 2026, marking a 16 per cent increase compared with the same period last year and the strongest performance since 2013.
The country’s transition towards low-emission mobility accelerated sharply during the period, with hybrid and fully electric vehicle sales both reaching record levels.
Sales of hybrid models rose by more than 71 per cent year-on-year between January and April, surpassing 90,000 units. Meanwhile, fully electric vehicle sales surged by 173 per cent, with more than 48,000 units sold in the same period.

Industry analysts said the figures reflect growing consumer confidence in alternative energy vehicles, supported by expanding infrastructure, technological advances and rising environmental awareness.
The sharp increase in electric mobility is also seen as part of a broader transformation within Brazil’s automotive sector, as the country strengthens its position in the global transition towards sustainable transport and green industrial development.
Experts note that continued growth in electric and hybrid vehicle adoption could accelerate investment in battery technology, charging networks and advanced manufacturing capabilities across Latin America’s largest economy. (TV BRICS/NAN)
