The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reported that soldiers have surrounded the venue of its crucial meeting with the federal government concerning minimum wage negotiations.
In a post on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the NLC disclosed the situation, stating, “Soldiers are presently surrounding the venue of the meeting between Labour and Government at the premises of the SGF.”
The NLC had previously issued a stern warning on Monday via its X handle, cautioning against any attempts to intimidate, provoke, or blackmail its leaders during the negotiations. The union emphasized that such actions would only exacerbate tensions and could lead to an indefinite prolongation of their strike action.

This development comes at a critical juncture as the NLC and the federal government attempt to resolve ongoing disputes over the minimum wage. The presence of military personnel at the negotiation site has raised concerns about the government’s approach to dealing with the labor union’s demands and the potential implications for future labor relations in the country.
The NLC’s alarm over the military presence highlights the heightened tensions and the precarious nature of the ongoing discussions. The union has been steadfast in its demands for a fair minimum wage and has expressed determination to continue its strike if their leaders are subjected to intimidation.
As the situation unfolds, the NLC’s stance suggests that the negotiation process could face significant hurdles, potentially leading to prolonged disruptions if a mutual agreement is not reached soon. The involvement of soldiers at the negotiation venue underscores the gravity of the situation and the urgent need for a peaceful and constructive resolution to the minimum wage dispute.
