A Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt has barred the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from conducting its congress in the state. This order was issued on Tuesday in response to a suit filed by several aggrieved party members.
The plaintiffs, Hon. David Chiinedu Omereji, Hon. Prince Solomon Eke, Isodoye Tobin, Goddy Manfred Pepple, Okiah Precious Chigozirim, Hon. Orolosama Peter Amachree, Goodfriday Nweke, Alfred Letam, Hon. Wechie Ndubisi Raymond, Mrs. Erebie Michael, and Hon. Ogenma Idalunimulu, filed the suit (PHC/2282/CS/2024) against the PDP, its National Chairman, National Financial Secretary, and National Organising Secretary.
Justice Sobere Biambo, the presiding judge, ruled in favor of the plaintiffs following an originating summons and an ex-parte motion. The judge stated, “Pursuant to this action filed on July 15, 2024, by way of an originating summons and a motion ex-parte praying this Honourable Court for an order of interim injunction restraining the defendants from holding or carrying out the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Congress in Rivers State scheduled for today.”
The court issued the following orders:
- An interim injunction restraining the defendants and their representatives from conducting the PDP Congress in Rivers State or rescheduling it to another date or location until the motion on notice is determined.
- An interim order stopping or suspending the PDP Congress in Rivers State, initially scheduled for July 27, 2024, pending the determination of the motion on notice.
- An interim order restraining the defendants from extending the tenure of the expired State, Local Government, and Ward Executive Officers of the PDP in Rivers State.
The court has adjourned the case to July 19 for the hearing of the motion on notice.
