Customs CG proposes 2024 budget, vows to elevate revenue, employee welfare

The Comptroller-General of Customs, CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, unveiled the Service’s 2024 budget to the Nigeria Senate Committee on Customs, emphasizing plans to exceed revenue targets and enhance staff welfare.

The CG defended the 2024 budget of 706.43 billion naira, emphasizing the consolidation of ongoing projects, enhancing staff welfare, and incorporating technology into Customs processes. CG Adeniyi highlighted plans to boost officer efficiency through incentives like awards, promotions, and allowances.

He pledged to surpass the 2024 revenue target of 5.079 trillion naira, marking a 27.75 percent increase from 2023. Strategies include implementing the national Single Window, streamlining Customs processes, port decongestion, inter-agency collaboration, anti-smuggling efforts, ICT integration, capacity building, and stakeholder engagement.

Support for local production and food security was underscored, with plans to grant duty payment waivers within a specific timeframe for vehicle owners. The recruitment of 1,600 personnel in 2024 was announced, with a focus on junior staff for Customs operations.

He also acknowledged a 12.62 percent revenue target shortfall in 2023, citing various factors but expressed optimism for a positive outcome in 2024.

Senator Isa Jibrin, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Customs, commended the CG’s achievements and urged him to excel further, assuring support in terms of remuneration and infrastructure to meet the 2024 target.
