Family Seeks Justice for Father Allegedly Killed by Masquerade in Anambra
In the Umuawulu community, of Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, the Okoye family is grappling with grief and demanding justice following the tragic death of their patriarch, Chief Shadrach Okoye by masquerade in the community. The incident, which occurred on December 26, 2023, has left the community in shock.
According to Chidubem Okoye, the eldest son of the deceased, Chief Okoye was accompanying a friend who had visited him when they encountered a group of masquerades on the road. One of the masquerades, identified as “Ifechukwu,” allegedly demanded money from Chief Okoye, blocking their path when he refused.
Despite explanations that he had no money, Chief Okoye was allegedly punched in the chest by the masquerade, causing him to collapse and subsequently pass away. Witnesses identified the assailant as a 19-year-old resident of the community, who has since fled.
The family’s quest for justice has faced obstacles, with the police stating that they cannot take action until the suspect is apprehended. The matter has been reported to both the Central Police Station in Awka and the traditional ruler of Umuawulu, Igwe Egwuonwu.
While Igwe Egwuonwu deferred comment until the completion of a committee’s investigation, the state police spokesman, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that the incident was under investigation.
As the Okoye family continues to mourn their loss, they remain determined to seek justice for Chief Shadrach Okoye’s untimely demise, hoping that those responsible will be brought to account for their actions.
