Flood: ADSEMA seeks FG support as houses submerge in Adamawa
The Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA) has appealed to the Federal Government for emergency support following flooding that submerged many houses and displaced hundreds in Yola.
Dr Celine Laori, Executive Secretary of ADSEMA, made the appeal while speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Yola.
Laori said the agency had yet to determine the full extent of damage caused by the heavy rainfall and midnight rainstorm.
“The flood submerged many houses in Jambutu and Bachure communities in Yola North and Yola South Local Government Areas.
“Drinking water sources in the affected communities have been contaminated, raising fears of a possible cholera outbreak.
“I am appealing for urgent provision of food, non-food items, safe drinking water and disease-prevention materials for displaced residents,” she said.
Laori attributed the flooding to heavy rainfall, construction on waterways and indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels.
She said ADSEMA in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross and other partners had commenced assessment of affected communities to determine the extent of damage and number of displaced persons.

The executive secretary also appealed to the Federal Government and development partners to provide emergency relief assistance to affected communities in Yola and Jimeta areas.
She expressed concern that many residents ignored repeated warnings to relocate from flood-prone areas and desist from blocking drainage channels.
Laori recalled that flooding claimed about 15 lives in Adamawa last year.
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had predicted Adamawa among states likely to experience flooding in 2026.
