The Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC) has earmarked over N900 million for the reconstruction of the 42-year- old Yauri Water works to ease difficulties faced by people in Yauri Emirate in Kebbi.

Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, the Managing Director of the commission, made this known while briefing newsmen during an inspection tour to the water works in Yauri LGA on Monday.

He said that similar intervention would be extended to other power producing communities in the area with the similar challenges as a result of unfulfilled agreement reached when the Kanji dam was constructed.

“I think for now, base on the collaborative meeting we had with the Kebbi government and our Engineers, we have penciled down N900 millions now for the project and we are ready to do more as we access the situation.

“One thing I want to emphasize here is the encouragement and commitment of the state government on this project. We are highly motivated by the government’s support and commitment, and we are committed to do the same to other power producing communities in the area,” he said.

“The undertaking will be done by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, state Ministry of Water Resources and HYPPADEC so that no stone will be left untouched in ensuring that a final solution is proffered to the Yauri water problem.

“The agency, after the inspection of the water works, would have a stakeholders’ meeting, comprising of the state government and HYPPADEC officials to analyse the water works issues and draw the line of action which shall be followed by the commencement of the project in the next few weeks,” the MD said.

Earlier,  Alhaji Zayyanu Shehu, the General Manager of the state Water Board, commended the commission for engaging the old staff and engineers who had been managing the water works since its creation in 1980’s.

“When the rehabilitation of the project is completed, it will make it easier for the staff on ground to maintain the water works,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu- Abdullahi, the Emir of Yauri, commended the agency and its partners for their prompt action.

“The agency is doing humanitarian services to the power producing communities which have been neglected for many years.

” This intervention will put an end to decades of water problems we have been experiencing in Yauri town and nearby villages in the emirate,” he said.
