India’s gold-winning run continues at Commonwealth Fencing Championships

India continued its impressive run at the 2026 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Lagos.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the competition is holding at the Rugby School Nigeria, Atlantic City, in Lagos.

VMT NEWS reports that India has dominated the medal standings across epee, sabre and foil events.

Indian fencers have defeated challengers from Australia, England, Wales, South Africa and host nation Nigeria throughout the championships.

The team has also excelled in wheelchair events, further increasing its impressive medal haul at the competition.

India leads the medal table with 17 gold, 13 silver and 13 bronze medals.

England occupies second position with two gold, two silver and nine bronze medals.

Nigeria and Cyprus occupy third and fourth positions, respectively, on the medal table.

Meanwhile, India defeated South Africa in the senior women’s epee team final to claim another gold medal.

Speaking on behalf of the Indian team, captain Taniksha Khatri described the victory as an amazing experience for the team.

“It was amazing. The game and the team—the team has done a really great job. We are having so much fun.”

Khatri said the team remained grateful for the support received from their families, friends and fencing federation.

“Our family, our friends, our fencing, our federation. We love them and we are really grateful to them.

“We are really happy to be with them,”she said

She said winning the gold medal was a proud and happy moment for the entire team and their supporters.

“I’m so proud and it’s a really happy moment for all of us. And for everybody else as well.”

Khatri said the team’s next major target was the 2026 Asian Games.

“Our next goal is Asian Games 2026.

“So we are really going to do our best. Thank you very much.”

She said the final against South Africa was tough, but good team discussions helped them manage the contest.

“It was a very tough one but actually it was not difficult because we had a good team discussion before the match.”

“And we are already a very strong team so it was not that hard.”

Khatri said the victory made the team proud because it also brought honour to their country, families and friends.

“We feel very happy and we feel proud.

“And we also made our country, family and friends proud so it makes us happy.”

She said the team had trained extensively throughout the season, including at the national camp.

“So, it has been amazing because this  season we have been fencing a lot.”

“We have been training hard in the national camp, around with our coaches and all of our teammates.”

Khatri said strategic planning before the bout also helped the team overcome South Africa.

“We strategised before the bout. So it was really helpful.”

“We didn’t face much difficulty winning the bout.”

She added that the team had enjoyed its experience in Lagos and was interested in experiencing more of Nigeria’s food and culture.

Shrihari Pise, India’s fencing coach, said the athletes worked collectively to secure the team gold medal.

“Yes, they fought for the team medal as a team so they get the achievement like this.”

“They are eligible for the gold medal.”

Pise said psychological preparation formed part of the team’s preparations for the final.

“Yes, before that, we had a practice session. We had also taken some psychological training sessions to prepare for the finals and other things, so they could help us give our best.”

He described the victory as an important achievement capable of motivating the next generation of Indian fencers.

“It’s a big achievement and it’s a growing up to next generation to give the best motivation to achieve more and more international medals in body and finish.”

Pise said the athletes’ consistency and commitment to hard work contributed significantly to their success.

“It’s a good one. They are doing very well and they are doing hard work every time so that’s where you get the success.”

India’s continued success has made it the standout team as the championships approach their conclusion.
