Insecurity: Social media operators help criminals to prepare ambushes against security agencies – Zuru Emirate laments
The Zuru Emirate Council, in Kebbi, has urged residents to desist from aiding criminals by posting videos and pictures of military and police operations in social media.
The Secretary of the council, Hassan Muhammad-Gado, gave the advise in a communique issued to pressmen after a working visit of the General Officer Commanding 8th Division of Nigerian Army, Maj.-Gen. UA Yusuf to Emir of Zuru, Alhaji Sani Sami in Zuru on Thursday.
The communique said that the visit of the GOC was part of his efforts to familiarise himself with traditional leaders and seek their collaboration in his task of ensuring security in Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Katsina states.
According to the communiques, the visit of the GOC gave rise to the following recommendations:
“The need for the state and federal governments to provide logistics and equipment to the Nigerian Army in order to enable them effectively combat banditry and criminal tendencies in the North-West.

“The need for both local and state government to develop access roads into the affected areas in order to facilitate more effective security operations.
“The need for the GOC to pursue and provide good welfare for officers and men of the Nigeria Army under his command.
” The need for members of the communities to desist from aiding criminals by posting videos and pictures of military and police operations in the social media. This often and inadvertently helps criminals to prepare ambushes against security agencies.”
It also called on general public to report bandits’ informants to security agencies for necessary actions and response to nefarious activities in various communities in the state.
Earlier speaking, Yusuf, said the purpose of his visit was to familiarise himself with the emir and solicit his support in order to confront crimes in the area.
He revealed that he was going to initiate a tripartite dialogue between various communities, Fulani leaders and government with a view to building lasting piece and security in the emirate.
The GOC, who thanked the emir for warm reception, promised to send more troops to the affected areas.
In his response, the emir, urged the army to engage in more aggressive mobile patrols, carrying out effective smart ambushes and promptly responding to distress calls from communities in the area.
“The Nigerian army remains the last hope of the masses when it comes to protection of lives and property.
“The army must be wiser and better than bandits, ” Sami said.
