Kadpoly assesses 70 final year fashion students through runway

The Department of Fashion Design and Clothing Technology of Kaduna Polytechnic,Kaduna on Saturday held a fashion runway to assess 70 final year students ahead of their graduation.

Speaking at the event, the Head of Department, Dr Alabi Usman, said the runway was organised to measure how well the students have developed their skills and creativity required to compete confidently in the global fashion industry.

“We are not just graduating students who can produce clothes within the classroom. We want to launch them into the global world of fashion business”,he said

Usman said the fashion show focused on their innovation, technical ability, and readiness to contribute to the fashion economy both locally and internationally.

He said the 2025 fashion show with the theme ‘Retro Revival of Contemporary Fashion Twist’, was one of the most well-organised programmes in recent years.

The head of department said the development reflected its steady progress in building a globally competitive fashion training system.

Usman said, “This is not the best yet, but compared to the past, it is better packaged and by the grace of God, our next edition will attract even more global attention.

“The idea behind this skill is not just for them to produce, it is for them to grow the Nigerian economy, become self-reliant, and create job opportunities.$

Earlier, the Rector, Dr Sulaiman Umar, urged the students to embrace entrepreneurship and leadership as they prepare to graduate, urging them to contribute meaningfully to national development.

Represented by the Dean of the College of Science and Technology, Aliyu Hassan, the rector commended the department and pledged continued support to it to ensure effective learning.

“Whatever we are doing here is to prepare our students to stand on their own after graduation to establish themselves and become employers of labour rather than waiting for government jobs,” Umar stated.

Meanwhile, some of the graduating students expressed their appreciation to the polytechnic and the department for impacting knowledge on them and teaching them skills that would sustain livelihood.

Mercy George, said the runway put her out as a designer, not just as one in the department but as one who is going out into the wider world.

“It is putting me on the front line because there are people, potential investors and people who are willing to see your work,” she said.
