Lagos leads Southwest NSF football eliminations

The race for the forthcoming National Sports Festival (NSF) intensified in the male football event on Wednesday, as Lagos, Ondo, Ekiti, and Oyo competed for points in the ongoing Southwest zonal elimination competition.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that four out of six participating states featured in the male football event, while Oyo, Lagos, and Osun registered for the female category.

The event is taking place at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium in Ibadan.

Lagos leads the male football table with four points, Ondo follows with three, while Ekiti and Oyo hold third and fourth positions with two and one point, respectively.

In the female category, Lagos and Osun are tied with three points each, while Oyo sits at the bottom of the table with zero points.

VMT NEWS reports that the states representing the zone at the National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024, scheduled for May 16 to 30 in Abeokuta, will emerge after Thursday’s final leg.

The Director of Sports Development at Lagos State Sports Commission, Nunayon Travih, expressed confidence that Team Lagos would qualify in most events for both male and female categories.

“We have many undergraduates from our youth team competing, which has contributed to the state’s strong performance,” Travih said.

He highlighted Lagos’ success in basketball, football, and cricket, emphasising that the team remains committed to maintaining its high performance.

Travih, however, decried the poor state of facilities at Obafemi Awolowo Stadium and urged the Southwest zonal office of the National Sports Commission to improve sporting infrastructure.

He added that better facilities would make the competition more competitive and engaging for participants.
