Lagos opens rehabilitated Olusosun facility road to boost waste evacuation
The Lagos State Government has inaugurated the rehabilitated Road E and new disposal platforms at the Olusosun Disposal Facility in Ojota to improve waste evacuation and strengthen waste management infrastructure across the state.
The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the project, executed through the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), is aimed at easing operational challenges associated with waste disposal.
Speaking at the inauguration on Tuesday, LAWMA Managing Director, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the intervention would eliminate operational bottlenecks and improve access within the facility.
He said recent heavy rainfall had damaged sections of Road E, slowing the movement of compactor trucks transporting municipal waste from across Lagos.
According to him, the rehabilitated road and additional disposal platforms will enable more trucks to discharge waste simultaneously, reducing turnaround time and improving operational efficiency.
“This project represents another milestone in our commitment to building a more efficient and resilient waste management system for Lagos,” Gbadegesin said.
He said the project aligned with Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s commitment to strengthening waste management infrastructure through strategic public-private partnerships.
Gbadegesin commended Zoomlion Nigeria Ltd. for rehabilitating the road under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, describing the collaboration as a growing technical partnership supporting the engineering and management of waste infrastructure in the state.
He noted that waste management was resource-intensive and required strategic partnerships, technical expertise and sustained investment.
The LAWMA boss disclosed that Zoomlion was constructing Transfer Loading Stations at Olusosun and Solous III, each with a capacity to process 2,500 metric tonnes of waste daily.
He added that the state government was also developing Material Recovery Facilities, waste-to-energy plants and biogas facilities, while more compactor trucks would be acquired over the next three years to boost waste evacuation.

Gbadegesin said Olusosun currently receives about half of the municipal solid waste generated daily in Lagos, stressing that sustained investment in critical infrastructure remained essential as the state transitions to an integrated and environmentally sustainable waste management system.
He reiterated that the planned decommissioning of the Olusosun Disposal Facility would be implemented in phases, with adequate alternative infrastructure provided to ensure uninterrupted waste management services.
Gbadegesin urged residents to support government efforts by patronising assigned PSP operators, paying waste collection bills promptly and avoiding indiscriminate refuse dumping.
The Managing Director of Zoomlion Nigeria Ltd., Mrs Habiba Abubakar, said the road and disposal platforms were completed in 26 days, ahead of schedule.
She described the project as the first phase of a broader partnership with LAWMA to improve waste management infrastructure and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering additional projects to enhance waste collection, transfer and disposal across Lagos.
Also speaking, President of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria, Dr Olugbenga Adebola, commended the Lagos State Government, LAWMA and Zoomlion for the intervention.
Adebola said improved access to disposal facilities was critical to efficient waste evacuation, adding that the project would reduce operational bottlenecks, improve turnaround time for compactor trucks and enhance waste evacuation across the state.
He expressed optimism that ongoing investments in Transfer Loading Stations and other infrastructure would further strengthen Lagos’ environmental management system.
