Nigeria@61: NIDO to celebrate at chapter levels owing to COVID-19 protocols

Nigerians in the Diaspora (NIDO) Americas says it will celebrate the Oct. 1 Nigeria Independence Day at chapter levels in line with COVID-19 protocols.

The Chairman of NIDO-Americas, Mr Obed Monago, made this known in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

“We, at NIDOA are planning to celebrate the October 1st Independence Day at chapter levels, due to COVID-19 protocols.

“My understanding is that, the Consulate Office in New York will join hands with Nigerian groups, including NIDOA to stage the usual New York parade.

“Many well-meaning Nigerians are expected to be in attendance in celebration of the independence of our fatherland,” Monago said.

He said that although the country faced several challenges, Nigerians should always remain patriotic to be able to surmount obstacles and move the nation forward.

“Since our country is currently at the cross road with serious threats to disintegration through numerous agitations for self-rule, my opinion for solution is to devolve the power from the centre.

“There should be decentralisation of the Federal Government and to allow the states more autonomy that will include resource control, civilian policing and electoral processes.

“Let the Federal Government be burdened with external affairs, external threats, mighty power to also contain internal threats and disorders, just like what is obtained in the U.S.

“Such is the system of government we are copying; we can adapt to the U.S. system of governance, but make it Nigeria eccentric, because of our unique ethnic mix-up,” the chairman added.

VMT NEWS reports that NIDO is designed to harness and galvanise the professional, as well as the financial resources of Nigerians abroad, to promote Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
