Nigeria’s “Science Revolution”: TETFund to End Decades of Research Dependency with Six World-Class Mega-Labs

By Hannatu Lot

In what is being hailed as a “game-changing” moment for the nation’s technological future, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has received the strategic blueprint to operationalize six Multi-Purpose Zonal Laboratories across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

The move aims to erase the “national shame” of Nigerian researchers having to send samples to countries like the UK, South Africa, and even Ghana for basic scientific bench-work.

Speaking at the report presentation ceremony on Friday, TETFund Executive Secretary, **Arc. Sonny Echono**, revealed that the vision for these laboratories dates back fifteen years. The project was initially shelved a decade ago when the federal government decided to establish 12 new universities instead.

“There is nothing like an idea whose time has come,” Echono stated. “These laboratories are the flagship of our efforts to wipe away our sense of shame and restore national pride.”

He recalled the harrowing days of the COVID-19 pandemic, where the lack of local facilities meant results took up to a week to process, allowing the virus to spread unchecked—a tragedy that will not be repeated.

The advisory committee, inaugurated in February 2026, conducted rigorous on-site inspections of the six host universities. Their findings show a varying landscape of readiness:

| Host University | Region | Completion Status |

The Bayero University Kano (BUK)** | North West | ~80% (Physical Sciences building complete)

The University of Lagos (UNILAG)** | South West | Ongoing |

The University of Abuja** | North Central | Ongoing |

The University of Port Harcourt** | South South | Ongoing |

The University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus | South East | (Early Stage) |

The University of Maiduguri** | North East | (Early Stage) |

To avoid the risk of installing sensitive, high-tech equipment in unfinished buildings, Arc. Echono announced a **synchronized “Phased Deployment”** strategy. Procurement will begin immediately for **Bayero University Kano**, which is expected to be fully ready by August. Three other sites are projected for completion by February 2027.

The committee, emphasized that these are not just local labs but Strategic National Assets designed for international accreditation. The report includes a curated inventory of advanced instrumentation covering:

 -Life & Physical Sciences

 -Engineering & Workshop Tools

 -Cell Culture Systems

 -High-Performance Computing Infrastructure

One of the most critical sections of the report addresses the “Nigerian Factor”—the poor maintenance of public infrastructure. To counter this, the committee proposed a linear, autonomous management structure

“World-class equipment without a robust management ecosystem cannot deliver transformative impact,” the committee warned.

”The labs will operate with a quasi-autonomous governance model, allowing them to partner with the private sector and engage in commercial analytical services to fund their own upkeep.”

Closing the event, Arc. Echono thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the political will to revive the project. He noted that the committee’s work isn’t over; members will be involved in pre-shipment inspections and installation oversight to ensure every piece of equipment meets the exact specifications required.

“We are taking a bold step to make Nigerian institutions competitive with any in the globe,” Echono concluded. “We are delivering a tomorrow that our children will be proud of.”
