Obasanjo urges leaders to focus on food security

213

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on leaders to prioritize food security, emphasizing the importance of “stomach infrastructure.” Obasanjo made these remarks in Sokoto during the unveiling of 136 housing units purchased by the Sokoto state government for N1.820 billion.

The units are intended for low-income earners and other citizens on an owner-occupier basis, addressing the state’s growing need for shelter.

Obasanjo is on a two-day working visit to Sokoto at the invitation of Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto to inaugurate various projects. He highlighted that food security is paramount, surpassing personal and health security in importance.

Praising Governor Sokoto’s efforts in transportation, road construction, agriculture, and housing, Obasanjo likened the governor’s resilience and performance to that of a stallion horse. “Your strong, energetic, and resilient qualities in leadership have made you achieve a lot within your first year in office,” he said, expressing confidence that these accomplishments would enhance the governor’s prospects for a second term.

The former president also commended Senator Aliyu Wamakko and Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar for their contributions to the state’s development.

He praised Wamakko as a good political mentor and the Sultan as a role model in the caliphate. “Wamakko remains a good mentor who has found a capable mentee in the governor,” Obasanjo noted.

Governor Aliyu Sokoto, in his remarks, stated that the numerous housing projects align with his campaign promises to improve the welfare and living standards of the people.

He explained that the state government has invested substantial resources in various projects, including road construction, empowerment initiatives, water supply, and agricultural inputs for farmers, as well as equipping hospitals. “We are determined to continue developing the state, providing modern facilities at all sites, including Islamiyya schools, markets, and playgrounds,” the governor stated.

Governor Sokoto also expressed his gratitude to the former president for accepting the state’s invitation and participating in the historic event.

The housing project is a testament to the government’s commitment to addressing the basic needs of its citizens, thereby fostering a stable and prosperous community.

Obasanjo’s emphasis on food security underscores a broader call for leaders to address fundamental human needs. His support for Governor Sokoto’s initiatives highlights the importance of comprehensive development strategies that encompass housing, infrastructure, and agricultural support to ensure the well-being of all citizens.
