The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has firmly dismissed rumors that it is engaged in merger discussions with other political parties in anticipation of the 2027 general election. This clarification was made by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in a statement issued in Abuja yesterday.
Following the 587th meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP on June 4, 2024, Ologunagba emphasized that the party is not involved in any merger, fusion, or amalgamation negotiations with any other political entity or interest group.
“The PDP, as a genuinely people-oriented party, remains open and welcoming to all Nigerians, including our former members who have joined other parties,” Ologunagba stated. “However, we assert that our party remains robust and formidable, fully capable of securing victories in free, fair, and transparent elections across the country.”
The NWC highlighted the significant influx of new members into the PDP through its ongoing membership drive across all electoral wards in Nigeria. This surge in membership, they noted, underscores the party’s continued appeal and its position as the preferred choice for a majority of Nigerians.
“The public, our numerous party members, democratic institutions, and the international community should disregard any reports suggesting a merger between the PDP and any other political party,” Ologunagba continued. “Such notions are not within the consideration of our great party.”
Ologunagba’s statement aims to quash the speculations and reassure members and supporters of the PDP’s independent and self-reliant path toward the upcoming elections. The party remains committed to its principles and confident in its ability to garner widespread support without the need for alliances or mergers.
In conclusion, the PDP’s leadership reiterated its dedication to maintaining the party’s integrity and focus on its mission to serve the Nigerian people effectively. The PDP is poised to continue its role as a leading political force, drawing strength from its broad-based support and steadfast commitment to democratic ideals.
