Okowa hails Nigerian athletes after record-breaking NCAA performances
President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Tonobok Okowa, has praised the outstanding performances of Nigerian athletes at the ongoing NCAA East and West Regionals in the United States.
Okowa, in a statement issued in Lagos, described the athletes’ achievements as evidence of Nigeria’s growing strength in global athletics.
Leading the list of standout performers was sprint sensation Kanyinsola Ajayi of Auburn University.
Ajayi clocked a world-leading 9.84 seconds in the men’s 100 metres.
The remarkable feat saw him break the Nigerian record of 9.85 seconds set by Olusoji Fasuba in 2006.
Okowa also commended Samuel Ogazi of the University of Alabama for his impressive performance in the men’s 400 metres.
Ogazi ran a sensational 43.82 seconds to establish a new personal best.
The performance also propelled him to the top of the world rankings for the season.
Reacting to the performances, Okowa expressed delight at the growing influence of Nigerian athletes within the United States collegiate athletics system.

“We are extremely proud of our athletes who continue to make Nigeria proud on the global stage,” he said.
Okowa specifically praised Kanyinsola Ajayi, Samuel Ogazi, Israel Okon, Nicholas Fakorede, Alaba Akintola, Edidiong Udo, Joshua Caleb, Charles Godfred, Favour Onyah, Chioma Nwachukwu and Tima Godbless.
He also recognised Ella Onojuvwevwo, Prestina Ochonogor, John Caleb and David Akhalu, among others.
“These athletes have shown tremendous determination and excellence,” he said.
The AFN president noted that several Nigerian athletes had secured qualification for the 2026 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The championships are scheduled to take place next month in Eugene, Oregon.
According to Okowa, the athletes’ accomplishments have further reinforced Nigeria’s reputation as a producer of world-class athletic talent.
He assured the athletes of the federation’s continued support and the prayers of Nigerians.
Okowa said the federation would continue to encourage them as they prepare for their finals and the championships in Eugene.
“I congratulate all of them for their outstanding performances and wish them continued success in the competitions ahead,” he added.
