School sports festival to end with Olympic-Day Run in Anambra – Onyedum

The 2023 Olympic-Day Run will hold on June 24 which coincides with the grand finale of the Anambra School Sports Festival.

Tony Nezianya, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), said 21 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have so far indicated their readiness to hold the Olympic-Day Run in their various states while more are being expected to join the train.

Nezianya said the states are Anambra, Edo, Bayelsa, Kebbi, Yobe, Kwara, Ondo, Gombe, Sokoto, Ogun, Osun, Jigawa, Taraba, Delta, Oyo, Sokoto, Kano, Imo, Nasarawa, Kogi, Borno and the FCT.

He said this year’s edition, with the theme: “Let’s Move”, would mark the return of elaborate celebration after the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic.

“It has been planned as a special day to promote the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect as enunciated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over the years.

‘’The aim is to encourage people to be physically active for at least 30 minutes a day, corresponding to the minimum time recommended by the World Health Organization for good health

“This year will not be an exception as many States are already preparing to organise the programme in their various states,” he said.

In Anambra, Patrick-Estate Onyedum, Chairman of the Anambra Sports Development Commission, said the Olympic-Day Run would hold in the morning to kickstart the closing ceremonies of the first Solution School Sports Festival.

Onyedum said Gov. Chukwuma Soludo, a lover of sports and Olympic movement in particular, had directed the Commission to ensure that Anambra held a worthwhile Day Run.

“The special thing about this school sports festival is that it will end with this year’s Olympic-Day Run. We shall participate fully in the Day Run and cap it up with our festival finals.

“This school sports festival is the first after more than 10 years, the idea is to discover and nurture future Olympians.

“I thank Mr Governor for graciously approving the festival and I hope that officials of the NOC would be around to see the best of grassroots sports at the grand finale,” he said.
