Spain edge Belgium 2-1, reach semifinals

Spain booked their place in the FIFA World Cup semi-finals, spain edge Belgium 2-1 in a pulsating quarter-final in Los Angeles.

The victory secured a mouth-watering semi-final against France, who eliminated Morocco 2-0 a day earlier.

Spain dominated early possession and deservedly opened the scoring after 30 minutes through Fabián Ruiz, finishing after Thibaut Courtois parried Dani Olmo’s effort.

Belgium responded positively and restored parity before half-time through Charles De Ketelaere, who converted Timothy Castagne’s inviting cross to silence Spanish celebrations.

The second half produced relentless attacking football as both sides chased a decisive breakthrough with goalkeepers making crucial saves to keep hopes alive.

Belgium suffered a significant setback when veteran goalkeeper Courtois sustained a thigh injury and tearfully left the pitch, replaced by Senne Lammens.

Spain seized the opportunity two minutes from time when Mikel Merino reacted quickest after Lammens failed to hold a long-range effort.

Merino calmly tapped home from close range, sparking jubilant celebrations among Spanish players and supporters as Belgium’s resistance finally crumbled.

Spain defended resolutely during the closing stages to preserve their narrow advantage and eliminate a determined Belgian side from the tournament.

“We stayed calm and believed until the end,” Merino said after scoring the decisive winner. “These are the moments you dream about.”

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente praised his team’s resilience, saying: “This squad never stops believing. They showed character against an outstanding opponent.”

Belgium coach Rudi Garcia lamented missed opportunities, adding: “We competed well, but small details decided the match. Losing Courtois also hurt us.”

Spain will now face France in the semi-finals as they continue their pursuit of a second FIFA World Cup title.

The News Agency of Nigeria NAN reports that the match was played at the Los Angeles Stadium, Inglewood, California, United States.
