TETFUND awards N53m research grants to FUD

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund ( TETFund) has granted N53 million to the Federal University Dutse (FUD) for research into solutions for banditry and mosquito-borne diseases.

The Director of Public Affairs of the university, Mr Abdullahi Yahaya-Bello, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Dutse.

He said the grants were awarded under the TETFund National Research Fund (NRF) to support two research projects undertaken by the university.

Yahya-Bello said N25 million of the amount was awarded to Prof. Ado Garba-Jangargari to conduct a study titled, “Tech for Peace : Engaging Northern Pastoralists Non-Agricultural Livelihoods to Counter Banditry and Kidnapping”.

According to him, the project will explore non-agricultural livelihood opportunities for northern pastoralists as part of efforts to address banditry and kidnapping.

The director said Prof. Joshua Balogun also secured N28 million as grant for his project titled, “Development of Indoor Carbon Dioxide Sequestration Machine (iCor-SeMa) for Diversionary Control of Mosquitoes in Nigeria”.

He said the projects would run for 24 months and were expected to contribute to addressing security and public health challenges.

Yahaya-Bello quoted the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ahmad Muhammad-Gumel, as congratulating the researchers and urging them to ensure that the projects were delivered within the approved timeline.

The vice-chancellor assured the institution of more research funding following the recent sensitisation of lecturers on grant opportunities available of grants through the NRF and globally.
