UN decries growing Taliban violence against peaceful protesters

The United Nations Human Rights Office (OHCHR) has demanded the Taliban end its increasingly violent treatment of people demonstrating in Afghanistan.

The bloodshed was not benefiting anyone, spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said in Geneva on Friday, warning that “it is not going to help to consolidate and stabilize society.”

According to Shamdasani, violent acts by the militant Islamist Taliban against peaceful protesters have increased in the four weeks since they took power in the country, and the OHCHR has received reports of four deaths so far.

In addition, Shamdasani mentioned that dozens had been injured and arrested, including women and journalists.

She said the Taliban were using gunfire to disperse demonstrators, as well as beatings and imprisonment to punish them.

There had also been raids on homes to find protesters, she added.

The Taliban banned all future protests on Wednesday and threatened serious consequences for anyone disobeying the edict.

Shamdasani, on the other hand, called for freedom of assembly for demonstrators: “It is crucial that those in power listen to their voices,” she said.
