Yobe assembly pledges commitment to end drug abuse

The Yobe State House of Assembly on Wednesday reiterated its commitment to curb drug abuse in the state.

The Speaker of the house, Alhaji Buba Mashio, stated this while receiving members of the Youth Awareness Council (YAC), an NGO on a visit in Damaturu.

The speaker said that drug abuse and other  social vices were of  major concern to the house and other stakeholders in the state.

According to him, the state government had  enacted a law for the establishment of a rehabilitation center in the state, following reports on increasing cases of drug abuse.

“Gov. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe has assented to a law that will assist in the eradication of drug abuse in the state.

“We are now waiting for the establishment of the management board which will ensure full take off  of the law,’’ he said.

Mashio assured the visitors that the house would run an open-door policy that would enhance partnership with them for eradication of drug abuse and other vices in the state.

The speaker commended the members of the organisation for their good initiative, expressing confidence that they would greatly assist in eradicating the menace.

Earlier, Mr Ishaku Chilariye, the Director of Administration and General Services,  YAC said their objectives included addressing all forms of drug abuse, and other social vices.

He said the organisation was established to assist in  tackling the alarming increase in drug abuse, child abuse, prostitution, and other problems in the local communities.

Chilariye explained that the organisation’s aim was to create awareness and sensitise communities on the effects of drug abuse, prostitution, and other vices, in order to rehabilitate and reintegrate affected victims back into the communities.
