Yobe SOLID Project Workshop Engages MDAs, Stakeholders On World Bank Environmental, Social Standards

DAMATURU – The Yobe State Solutions for Internally Displaced and Host Communities (SOLID) Project, has organized a one-day workshop in collaboration with the Northeast Development Commission and a team of independent consultants.

This event aimed to enhance understanding of the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) and gathered key staff from Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), as well as representatives from internally displaced persons (IDPs), traditional leaders, civil society organizations (CSOs), and other key stakeholders.

Held at the SSG’s Conference Hall in Damaturu, the workshop provided a platform for expert presentations focused on strengthening environmental protections and ensuring the social well-being of affected communities.

The discussions emphasized Governor Buni’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable development and the importance of aligning SOLID Project activities with environmental and social principles, especially for marginalized and vulnerable groups such as IDPs and host communities.

Speaking at the event, Yobe State SOLID Project Coordinator, Suleiman Dauda, appreciated the leadership of Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni in ensuring the success of the SOLID project.

The State Coordinator offered an overview of the project’s objectives, recognizing MDAs and other stakeholders as crucial to successful project implementation.

He noted that the SOLID Project will greatly enhance development in Yobe State, particularly in displacement-affected local government areas, through infrastructure development in essential sectors such as roads, water, healthcare, agriculture, and education, along with vital livelihood support initiatives.

The workshop included sessions led by experts, such as Professor Ahmed Sabo of Green Engagement Limited, on the Environmental and Social Management Framework (ESMF) and Labour Management Procedures (LMP). Additional consultants, Dr. Akim and Mr. Donald, presented on the Resettlement Policy Framework (RPF) and Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP), while Dr. Amos Bako addressed identifying and managing potential environmental and social risks.

In group discussions led by Professor Jonathan Ogwuche, MDAs shared their roles, responsibilities, and challenges in implementing the SOLID Project’s ESF, fostering a collaborative and in-depth exchange among all attendees.

Following the workshop, the SOLID Project team and consultants conducted field visits to IDP settlements and host communities in Damaturu to gain firsthand insights into the realities on the ground and better shape project interventions to meet community needs.

This initiative, championed by Governor Buni, is a testament to Yobe State’s commitment to responsible and impactful development for the benefit of all citizens.
