Yobe State Launches Ambitious Urban Planning Initiative, Partnering with UN Agencies
Yobe State is embarking on a significant strategic development push, aiming to create comprehensive urban and local master plans for its capital, Damaturu, and other major towns.

The initiative, which involves collaboration with United Nations agencies including UN-HABITAT, IOM, and UNHCR, signifies the state government’s commitment to balanced and inclusive growth.
Governor Mai Mala Buni, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Baba Malam Wali, announced that the planning scope will extend beyond Damaturu to include Potiskum, Nguru, Gashua, Geidam, and Buni-Yadi.
This expansion aims to decentralize development opportunities and essential services, ensuring they are accessible across the state and not concentrated solely in the capital.
The government is prioritizing the development of modern, inclusive master plans to guide orderly growth and enhance service delivery.
The administration’s strategy emphasizes productivity, functional infrastructure, and robust systems, with substantial investments being made in road networks, healthcare facilities, and educational infrastructure across all 178 political wards.

Furthermore, Yobe State is focusing on economic empowerment, particularly in agriculture, recognizing its significant potential. The government plans to increase its investment in agricultural initiatives to boost income generation, viewing this as crucial for meaningful development.

The UN delegation, led by Dr. Christian Okafor of UN-HABITAT, is supporting the development of a Spatial Development Strategy, the Damaturu Urban Plan, and the Maisandari Local Action Plan.
This collaboration aims to establish a long-term framework for coordinated urban growth, infrastructure development, and land-use planning that promotes resilience, sustainability, and inclusive development in Yobe State.
The state government has expressed its readiness to work closely with the UN agencies to implement people-centered interventions that will improve living conditions and foster positive narratives for the state.
