UDUTH Performs Successful Pediatric Open Heart Surgeries

In what is considered as a rare medical feat , the Usman DanFodio University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) Sokoto , has carried out successful Pediatric Open Heart Surgeries on two children with holes in theirs heart.
The Head of Cardio thoracic Usman DanFodio University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto Dr Abubakar Umar disclosed this to newsmen on Sunday in Sokoto.
He further said “this is an accomplishment of our dreams, and visions seeing that this is possible in Northern Nigeria , particularly here in Sokoto Umar stated.

He commended the medical team comprising of Cardio thoracic surgeons led by it president Dr Uvie Onakpoya ,and former president Dr Bode Falase among others.
Also speaking the president of Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons of Nigeria (ACTSON) Dr Uvie Onakpoya lamented the high incidence of cardiac diseases and its contribution.to.poor health status and low life expectancy in the country.
He said it was in the bid to Sten the tide , that association over the past years has encouraged tertiary health management to invest heavily in the procurement of equipment , medical consumables and training of personnel to able to diagnose and treat heart diseases both medically and surgically.
Dr Uvie commended the management of Usman DanFodio University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) for equipping the hospital and providing enablement for the success of the operations.
He divulged that in no distance time UDUTH would become a referral Centre for the treatment of heart related diseases in Northern Nigeria.
Dr Uvie who said other health related issues could be managed unlike that of heart lamenting.that the impact of heart diseases both acquired and congenital which hitherto were considered as exoteric and uncommon is on the rise
He noted that Nigeria recorded 55000 cases of heart related diseases yearly maintaining that out of these Cardio thoracic surgeons are able to carry out 200 surgeries yearly due to inadequate fund.
He task government at all levels and well-meaning Nigerians on fund raising to support those having heart diseases.
He equally advised well-meaning Nigerians to shun medical tourism in abroad saying rather Nigeria hospital should be equipped to enable the medical specialists doing their work noting that what is done in abroad can also be done in Nigeria.
