Nigerian neurosurgeon wins international social hero award in Germany
A Nigerian neurosurgeon, Dr Douglas Okor, has received the 2026 International Social Hero Afrika Award in recognition of his contributions to advanced medical care, human dignity and social impact.
Okor received the award at the 2026 Golden Planet Award ceremony held in Dreieich, Frankfurt, Germany, a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday said.
It said that the award, presented in the Health Care, Human Dignity and Social Impact category, recognised his contributions to improving access to specialised neurosurgical services in Nigeria and restoring hope to patients requiring complex medical care.
According to it, at the ceremony, Okor, who received extensive medical training in the United Kingdom, returned to Nigeria to provide specialised neurosurgical services, reducing the need for patients to travel abroad for expensive treatment.
It quoted him as saying that “Nigerian patients are worth it”, a philosophy which it said guided his commitment to delivering quality healthcare in the country.
It said that beyond his work in complex neurosurgery, Okor and his team were also involved in strengthening primary healthcare and philanthropic activities through the Ashanti Graham Health and Education Initiative Foundation.
The statement said the recognition also highlighted the contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora who returned home with acquired skills to improve lives and strengthen local institutions.
Nigeria’s Consul-General in Frankfurt, Amb. Yakubu Dadu, who attended the ceremony alongside other diplomats, said Okor’s work demonstrated the positive contributions of Nigerians in the diaspora.
Dadu said the neurosurgeon’s decision to bring his expertise back to Nigeria underscored the capacity of Nigerians abroad to contribute meaningfully to development in their home country.
The ceremony also recognised 12 other individuals and organisations for contributions to social development, education, business, media, sports and environmental sustainability.
Among the recipients were Hendrik Hey of Welt der Wunder TV, who received the Social Hero Award 2026 for Sustainable Media, and musicians Bernhard Brink and Hassan Annouri, recognised for their contributions to humanity and social commitment.
