Governor Sanctions Death Sentence for Kano Bombing Mastermind
The Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, has directed the prosecution of Shafi’u Abubakar, the suspected mastermind behind last week’s bombing of a mosque in Gadan village, Gezawa Local Government Area.
The attack, which occurred during early morning prayers, has resulted in 15 deaths, with over 20 individuals hospitalized.
Governor Yusuf announced that Abubakar, 38, will be prosecuted before a Shariah court.
He emphasized his commitment to ensuring justice for the victims and stated he would not hesitate to sign the death warrant if Abubakar is found guilty and sentenced to death.
The governor visited the hospital on Sunday evening immediately upon returning from a trip to Abuja, offering words of comfort to the victims and their families.
He also donated N100,000 to each of the victims to assist with their recovery.
Police investigations revealed that Abubakar’s motive was a family dispute over inheritance rather than political or terrorist motivations.
According to the police, Abubakar threw a locally-made bomb into the mosque targeting family members he believed had wronged him in the distribution of inheritance.
The police, who arrested Abubakar last Wednesday, reported that he admitted to the crime, citing prolonged family disagreements as his reason for the attack.
Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 1, Umar Sanda, reiterated that the incident was a personal dispute.
