Mokwa Floods: Red Cross distributes relief items to affected families

The Nigerian Red Cross has provided critical non-food items to 100 families in Mokwa to alleviate their suffering and help restore a sense of dignity in the wake of a devastating flood.

This is contained in a statement by Mr Chima Nwankwo, Head of Communications for the society, on Monday in Abuja.

According to him, in the aftermath of the floods that swept through Mokwa on May 29, claiming more than 150 lives and displacing hundreds, the society stepped in with lifesaving support for affected families.

“Each household received plastic buckets and jerry cans for safe water storage, mobile taps to support proper handwashing and hygiene, and a pack of Aquatabs, water purification tablets that kill harmful microorganisms.

“They also received sleeping mats, blankets, camp beds, and shelter kits containing tools and materials needed to build temporary shelters,” Nwankwo said.

Nwanwko in the statement quoted to the Secretary General of the society, Abubakar Kende, as saying the items are essential for families trying to rebuild their lives after such a devastating event.

According to Kende, clean water, proper hygiene, and shelter are not luxuries, they are lifesaving.

He also stated that the society would continue working closely with local authorities, including the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to monitor the situation and coordinate further relief efforts.

“More distributions are scheduled in the coming days to reach additional communities affected by the floods,” Kende said.
