Organized labour in Sokoto State has thrown its weight behind Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s bid for a second term, citing his administration’s record on workers’ welfare and wage implementation.

The endorsement was declared on Friday in Sokoto during the 2026 International Workers’ Day celebration by the State Chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Alhaji Abdullahi Aliyu Jungle

Speaking on behalf of both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress, Jungle said Sokoto workers had no reason to demand a change in leadership come 2027.

The event was themed “Insecurity, Poverty — Bane of Decent Work”. Labour leaders used the platform to assess the state government’s policies since Aliyu assumed office.

“You have done nothing wrong to us and you have been tremendously assisting us in many ways,” the NLC chairman told the gathering. “Therefore, nothing warrants us to ask for a change of government in 2027.”

He added that workers in the state were satisfied with the direction of governance. “We are happy with all that you have been doing for us. While in other states they are progressing today, here in Sokoto, we are elated.”

Jungle listed the full implementation of the N70,000 new national minimum wage as a major achievement of the Aliyu administration. He said the policy covered all categories of workers in the state.

He also noted that payment of monthly salaries, pensions and gratuity had remained regular and without delays since the governor took office.

According to the labour leader, the consistency in payments had restored confidence in the civil service and improved productivity across ministries and agencies.

To mark the occasion, the NLC and TUC presented Governor Aliyu with an “Award of Excellence”. Jungle said it was unprecedented in the state’s labour history.

“This is the first time in the history of NLC/TUC in the state to bestow such awards on any governor,” he announced to applause from workers.

Governor Aliyu was represented at the event by his deputy, Alhaji Idris Muhammad Gobir, who received the award on his behalf.

In his response, Gobir said the governor accepted the award wholeheartedly and considered it a call to do more for workers at all levels.

He described the 2026 Workers’ Day as historic, praising the dedication and commitment of Sokoto workers to the development of the state.

The deputy governor stated that the administration had taken deliberate steps to reinvigorate the civil service and build a dignified workforce since 2023.

He recalled that Sokoto was the first state in the federation to fully implement the N70,000 new national minimum wage across board.

Gobir assured labour leaders that the government would sustain the cordial relationship existing between the administration and the unions.

The State Head of Service, Alhaji Abdulkadir Ahmed, also spoke at the event. He commended what he called the governor’s dynamic leadership style.

Ahmed said the approach had directly improved workers’ welfare and created a better work environment in the state public service.

He appealed to civil servants to reciprocate the governor’s gestures by showing greater dedication, discipline and professionalism in their duties.

The endorsement comes as political activities begin to build ahead of the 2027 general elections. It hands Governor Aliyu an early advantage in the race for a second term.

With the backing of the NLC and TUC, the governor now enters the pre-election season with organised labour as a key ally in Sokoto State.
