Delta Summit: Govt targets investment in blue economy, agriculture

The Delta Government says the state economic summit billed for August will expose investors to opportunities in its blue economy, creative and agricultural sectors among others in the state.

The State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr Charles Aniagwu, stated this on Thursday at a news conference in Asaba.

The Voice Media Trust (VMT NEWS) reports that the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit 2026 is slated for Aug. 3 to Aug. 5 in Asaba, with the theme: “Harnessing Our Strengths, Unlocking Our Potential”.

Aniagwu said that policy leaders and prospective international investors from China and Brazil and other global business leaders were being expected.

He said that the state had been receiving support and sponsorship for the summit from various concerned organisations because they had confidence in the Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori led administration.

According to him, the Vice President Kashim Shettima would declare the event open, Prof. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is expected to deliver the keynote address, while Prof. Patrick Lumumba will deliver a lecture.

He said that the current administration had been able to create an enabling environment; roads, manpower being churned out from the various universities in the state and has made efforts to ensure that the state remained secured.

Aniagwu said: “It is time we move out to bring in investors to take advantage of the ready and secured environment to establish their companies to do business with our people.

“This will generate employment for our people, and boost the standards of living of an average citizen of Delta.

“In September last year, we were in Brazil on a road show to showcase the effort we are making and the need for us to collaborate with our brother from other part of the globe to boost the economy of our state”.

He said that the state was also collaborating with other indigenous companies, adding that in the course of the summit, the state would expose the investors to its blue economy.

“We have over 163km of coastline along the Atlantic shore, oil and gas production, hospitality industry and creative sector.

“But the big one is the agricultural sectors where we are going to showcase the enormous potential that abounds in the state.

“We are also looking in the direction of livestock’s production in Delta, that is why our brothers in Brazil that have become proficient in management of livestock are showing interest in the Summit,” Aniagwu said.

Aniagwu said that investors would also be looking into the housing sector and other opportunities that abound in the state.

“A very notable Nigerian, Prof. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General, World Trade Organisation, will be the keynote speaker.

“Prof. Patrick Lumumba, the Kenyan, will deliver an address while Vice President Kashim Shettima will declare the event open among other notable Nigerians.

“The essence of the summit is to deeply boost our state economy and create the necessary employment that will trigger the opportunity for all as enshrined in the M.O.R.E Agenda of the Gov. Oborevwori led administration,” he said.

Speaking on the recent incident that happened at Effurun, Aniagwu said the state All Progressives Congress (APC) was not involved but described it as individual disagreements.

He blamed the online reports on the Effurun violence for the misrepresentation of facts to smear the ruling party.

He said: You know the difference between a political disagreement and certain level of individual rivalry.

“Certain level of rivalry caused some disturbance at Effurun at the weekend and in the course, one of the aide’s to the governor was badly injured.

He said that the other political parties are trying to skew the narrative to make it look as if it has to do with the support we have for Mr President.

He, however, urged the opposition to have some form of ingenuity and think of what they could do for the country and focus on it.

According to Aniagwu, the governor has directed the security agencies to fish out those involved in the fracas.

He said that the state government remained focused with issues of governance and development and such would tolerate any unruly behaviour.
