TETFund Leading the Charge: Mining Technology UniPod Activated at NSUK to Anchor National Innovation Network

May 8, 2026 – The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), in a strategic synergy with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Federal Government, has officially activated the Mining Technology and Resource Innovation University Innovation Pod (UniPod) at Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK).
This landmark activation solidifies TETFund’s commitment to transforming Nigerian beneficiary institutions from purely theoretical centers into vibrant hubs of industrial enterprise and technological sovereignty.

Representing the North-Central node of the National Innovation Network, the NSUK UniPod follows the successful launch of the AI UniPod at the University of Lagos last month, marking a rapid acceleration in the Fund’s mission to bridge the gap between the classroom and the marketplace.
Backed by a massive ₦30 billion public investment, the Nigeria Innovation Network is a specialized infrastructure designed to catalyze research and development across the six geopolitical zones.
TETFund’s Executive Secretary, Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono, emphasized that these pods are not merely physical structures but the “new face of education in Nigeria.”
The Network at a Glance:
| Zone | Institution | Specialization |
| South-West | University of Lagos | Artificial Intelligence (AI) |
| North-Central | Nasarawa State University, Keffi | Mining Technology & Resource Innovation |
| North-East | University of Maiduguri | Resilience and Recovery |
| North-West | Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria | Industrial & Government Technology |
| South-East| Michael Okpara University of Agriculture | Manufacturing and Trade |
| South-South | University of Uyo | Green and Blue Economy |
With Nasarawa State sitting on vast deposits of lithium, gold, baryte, and coal, TETFund’s choice of NSUK as the “Mine-Tech” hub is intentional. For decades, Nigeria has suffered “value flight”—exporting raw minerals while importing finished goods and losing potential jobs.
The NSUK UniPod changes this narrative by providing:
-Mineral Intelligence Labs: For tracing and grading strategic minerals like lithium.
-Green Mining Technology: Researching eco-friendly extraction methods to meet global energy transition standards.
-Enterprise Incubators: Where students move from academic research to launching mining startups.
“Nigerians have excelled all around the world. When you give them the opportunity and the challenge, they seize it,” stated Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono.
“The Federal Government, through this precedent, is providing that platform. By the end of the year, we expect as many as 20 of these UniPods to be operational across the country.”

The event featured strong commendations from the **Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, representing Vice President Senator Kashim Shettima, who praised the collaboration for its potential to add value to Nigeria’s 40+ commercially viable minerals.
To ensure the facility remains a 24/7 engine of innovation, Governor Abdullahi Sule announced that the Nasarawa State Government would provide a dedicated solar mini-grid for the UniPod, ensuring that research and production are never interrupted by power outages.
Ms. Elsie G. Attafuah, UNDP Resident Representative, highlighted that the over $2 million invested in this specific center by the UNDP, alongside TETFund’s robust backing, creates a world-class environment for young Nigerians to lead the global critical minerals era.
For the Vice-Chancellor of NSUK, Prof. Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, the UniPod transforms the university into the “intellectual engine room” of Nigeria’s mining sector.
By linking the university’s world-first Centre for Medical Geology and its storied Faculty of Geology with real-world industry tools, TETFund is ensuring that the next generation of geologists are not just job seekers, but job creators.
Through this partnership, TETFund continues to demonstrate that the future of Nigeria lies in Resource Sovereignty—ensuring our mineral wealth builds Nigerian futures, powered by Nigerian minds.
