‘Call of My Life’ delivers humour, romance in classic Nollywood style

A Nigerian romantic comedy ‘Call of My Life’ combines elements of humour, romance and emotional vulnerability, drawing on themes associated with classic Nollywood storytelling.

The movie, directed by Dammy Twitch and produced by Blessing Uzzi, was written by Uzoamaka Power, who also stars as Soluchi, the lead female character.

Other cast members of the movie are; Andrew Yaw Bunting, Justin Ugonna, Beverly Osu

Others are; Nkem Owoh, Patience Ozokwor and Zubby Michael.

The romantic comedy follows Soluchi (Uzoamaka Power), a hopeless romantic still healing from being jilted by her former lover, Kalu (Zubby Michael).

When a regular work call puts her in touch with the charming Eli (Andrew Bunting), Soluchi begins to see the possibility of the love story she has always wanted.

From the opening scenes, the movie establishes itself firmly as a comedy movie and maintains humour which is consistent from start to finish.

The film uses fast-paced storytelling with minimal delays, allowing viewers to engage quickly with the plot and characters.

The film uses both Igbo and English dialogue, with English remaining dominant, while the inclusion of Igbo adds cultural depth.

By infusing both languages in the same movie, it offers a refreshing balance in a contemporary Nollywood space that often leans heavily toward Yoruba language influences.

The cinematography, editing, and music also contribute to the film’s appeal.

The production adopts a simple but deliberate visual style, avoiding excessive dramatic effects while maintaining an aesthetically pleasing presentation.

One of the notable part of the movie is the vintage inspired atmosphere which stands out in spite of the story being set in modern times.

The costume design and hair styling reinforce this tone especially through Soluchi’s appearance which effectively reflects her personality and character development.

As for casting, the selection further strengthens the production as it blends fresh faces with veteran actors as ‘Bunting’ and ‘Ugonna’ deliver impressive performances in their respective roles.

Bevelry Osu’s performance as Zimuzo provides a memorable return for audiences familiar with her earlier screen work.

Veteran actors Owoh and Ozokwor add nostalgic value to the movie, reminding viewers of the charm associated with older Nollywood productions.

Michael’s portrayal of Kalu also adds energy to the film, with each cast member fully embodying their character without any role appearing overlooked.

Power’s portrayal of Soluchi stands out as one of the highlights of the movieas her performance brings emotional depth and relatability to the character.

The movie also succeeds in creating emotionally vulnerable characters with actors openly expressing emotions in ways that make the relationships and conflicts feel believable.

One particularly memorable sequence is the escalator scene, which carries a visually polished feel as special appearances by Johnny Drille and Cobhams Asuquo also add to the movie’s appeal.

However, the secondary love story feels underexplored, as viewers are given limited insight into how the supporting romantic relationship develops.

Although this does not significantly affect the main storyline, further exploration could have added more emotional depth to the film.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), “Call of My Life” stands out as a visually appealing and entertaining romantic comedy with strong performances, quality production and a refreshing storytelling style.

Its blend of humour, romance and nostalgic Nollywood elements makes it a cinema worthy film and suitable for audiences seeking a light hearted viewing experience with loved ones.
