NY Spikers upbeat after winning debut match in volleyball league

Lizzy Asemah, coach of NY Spikers Volleyball Club, says the team remains focused and determined to win all its matches at the ongoing 2026 National Division One and Two League, with NY Spikers upbeat about their chances in the competition.

Asemah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday that the team’s opening victory had given the players confidence in their debut appearance at the competition.

VMT NEWS reports that NY Spikers defeated Queen Aminat Spikers Volleyball Club 3-2 in their opening match on Monday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

Asemah said her players, in spite of being amateurs, overcame more experienced opponents to record their first victory.

“The team has taken us to a very high level now.

“They are amateur players and they had to play against players that have been in camp for years.

“We had limited time to prepare, but the girls delivered through hard work.

“We trained intensively in spite of the short preparation period and I am proud of them.

“Irrespective of the fact that they lost some sets, I will always be proud of them,” she said.

The coach added that the victory had raised expectations for the team going forward.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. There is a new level now.

“We are ready to take every match as it comes and we will continue to work harder to win our matches,” she added.

VMT NEWS reports that the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) 2026 Phase One Division One National League features 11 teams, while Division Two has seven teams in both the men’s and women’s categories.

The championship, which began on May 23, will end on June 5 at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
