NEDC to build 12 bridges in Yobe to reconnect flood-cut communities

The North East Development Commission (NEDC), says it is constructing 12 bridges in various locations across Yobe.

The Coordinator of NEDC in the state, Prof. Ali Abbas, disclosed this in Jumbam on Friday during an inspection of the ongoing construction of a twin-span, 30-metre bridge by the commission.

He said four of the bridges had been completed, while the remaining eight were at various stages of completion.

Abbas expressed satisfaction with the Jumbam bridge project, noting that it was about 90 per cent completed.

According to the coordinator, the contractor, Greyland Multiple Investment Ltd., had assured the commission that the project would be completed within four weeks.

He said the strategic bridge would connect Damaturu with several local government areas, including Tarmuwa, Bursari, Yunusari, Geidam, Bade, Nguru, Karasuwa, and Machina.

Abbas explained that the project was initiated by the NEDC Managing Director, Mr Mohammed Alkali, at the request of Gov. Mai Mala Buni, following the collapse of the road due to flooding caused by heavy rainfall.

The coordinator, however, expressed concern over the slow pace of work on the single-span, 20-metre Kaliyari bridge project, and urged the contractor to accelerate progress before the onset of heavy rains.

In his remarks, the Greyland Company Engineer, Mr Ngita Iliya, said the project met all contract specifications and requirements.

He assured that the bridge would be handed over in three to four weeks, as all materials required to complete the work within the timeframe were already on site.

A community leader in the area, Alhaji Ma’aji, commended the NEDC for the bridge project, saying it would end the threat of seasonal flooding in the area.
