The Zamfara State House of Assembly has called on the state government to establish three teacher training colleges in the state.

This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Gusau by the Director General, Press and Public Affairs of the House, Malam Mustafa Jafaru-kaura.

According to the statement, the training institute is to enhance primary and secondary education in the state.

“The Zamfara State House of assembly has called on the state government to establish teacher training colleges in each of the three Senatorial Districts of the state.

“This followed rigorous deliberations by the lawmakers during the plenary on a motion moved before the floor of the house by Alhaji Ibrahim Tukur (Bakura Constituency).

“This was over the deplorable and poor qualities of the primary and secondary teachers in the state,’’ he said.

Tukur said that establishment of the colleges became necessary considering the poor quality of teachers, primary and secondary education in the state

“Provision of teacher training colleges in the state will reinvigorate learning at the grassroots describing National Certificate in Education (NCE) as grossly inadequate to cater for our educational needs in terms of good teaching and learning in the state”, he said.

The lawmaker expressed fear that if proper measures are not taken regarding the quality of teachers in the state, it would soon plunge in serious academic and educational crisis.

After deliberations and various contributions from the lawmakers, the assembly unanimously agrees with the motion and to call on the state government as matter of urgency to embark on process of establishing the colleges.

The Deputy Speaker of the house, Musa Bawa who chaired the plenary, said the house has recommended that the state government established the three teacher training colleges in the state following the unanimous decision of the lawmakers.
